Chapter Sixteen

“So,” Lucian stopped at the threshold of my cell, leaning against the frame casually like he thought he needed to be invited in or something. I glanced back at him only to catch his eyes riding along the soft curves of my body that I should’ve taken more care to hide. Without my breasts, it wasn’t as pronounced as it would be, but I could see in my reflection that I still had a very feminine figure. And Luca definitely seemed to like it.

“I answered all your questions, I think it’s only fair if you answer mine now.” I arched an eyebrow and tried to look cool while on the inside I was freaking out slightly. I knew, deep down, that I wasn’t going to escape explaining myself. I hoped to have a bit more time to come up with a logical reason, but beggars can’t be choosers and all that.

The revelation that Luca and King were friends made the situation worse. Close enough that their friendship had a little nickname used by almost everyone I had run into that had touched the vampire world in some way.

“You’re clearly human of some kind, so what are you? A wolf? A witch? And why are you pretending to be a vampire?” I turned away and focused on moving further into my little cell. Not that anywhere in here would afford me privacy from Luca’s scrutinous gaze. What I wouldn’t give…

I stuck my hands in my pants like I was going to take them off, turning around to see him again only to find that his chivalry ended at killing guards for me. He was certainly intrigued to see what would be underneath the packaging.

I let out an annoyed snort, despite knowing I shouldn’t be that surprised as my fingers wrapped around the waistband of the pants and pushed them down. They were covered in dirt and sweat, some eggs from this morning still lingering as well. I kicked them off and aimed for the corner of the room, wasting as much time as I could before answering him.

“Do you mind?” I finally snapped, catching him still staring at me when I glanced up.

“Not at all, can I help with anything?” He grinned, and I knew then that whatever I was, it didn’t really bother him one way or the other. He just seemed... interested. Maybe it wasn’t as complicated as finding out what I was to tell King all about it. Perhaps it was just genuine curiosity based on attraction.

“You’re right, I’m a human,” I said as I turned away again. I needed to deal with this situation before Luca went running off to his bestie and told him all about me. I could do a binding spell. I would have to be quick enough, so he didn’t suspect what was happening.

Walking over to the small sink in my cell, I grabbed my plastic cup for brushing my teeth and filled it with water.

“I’m investigating a recent death here at the prison for the witches’ council.
